Video card overheating, waiting for contracting sucks, not going to be in SL for a while

That about sums it up.  I know this post is odd, considering I’m planning a trip to Europe in just 3 months, but I’ll explain.  I’m not that tech savvy and, right before SLCC, my monitor started having this poltergeist thingie happening to it.  It would randomly blink on and off and I’d have no way to predict when it would or wouldn’t.  I refused to believe it was anything with my system, since it’s less than a year old.

Well, it looks like it’s my video card.  I’ve been bluescreening if I do anything intensive, and sometimes nothing intensive. I’ve logged in every now and then to record machinima, but even that is risky for now.  I’ve had a large number of people get angry with me for not being around and I’m actually getting kind of tired of it. Real life happens. I’ve been around for the last 18 months almost night and day.

Why can’t I just go out and buy a new video card? See, that’s the funny part about contracting. You agree to do some work for someone and then suddenly it takes over *4* months to even prepare the contract to start work. I thought it would be done in the beginning of November because it was prepared for final signature. I see no end in sight, but there’s still a tidy January 1st deadline on the project. Since it’s a time-intensive project, I didn’t want to take on a complicated assignment and be pressed for time.

While I have a boatload of money on the way in 20-30 days, I don’t have the advance I’ve been waiting on. Sure, I could RMA the video card, but then I’d be without an entire COMPUTER while I waited for 3-4 weeks. So I’m sure that you can see my dilemma here. I want to be there for people, but I can’t while my computer is flipping out.

I miss socializing with all of you, but I hope you’ll understand why I’m not there.  I don’t normally like to discuss this stuff in public, but I also don’t like the hatemail. If you want to contact me out of SL, I’d be happy to chat with you, but not if it’s something that requires me to log into SL.

See you sometime soon!

    You sure it’s the vidcard? It might be your power supply not feeding enough juice to it; cards are demanding a lot nowadays. I had a similar blinking effect earlier this year and suspected it was my relatively new psu. Sure enough, the thing blew (though it thankfully didn’t take the whole board down with it). New, more thoroughly-researched psu installed and everything’s fine. So far.

    Don’t depend on a power supply’s advertised numbers and think you’re covered. They’re often misleading.

    Something to consider if you haven’t.

    Let me guess. As per usual, nobody’s going to move the deadline just because you can’t start work yet.

    Honestly, I’ve had a two month contract signed by the other party *on the morning of the day of the deadline*, and the project manager swing by to say “So, you’ll be done this-afternoon, then?”

    The contract didn’t say that. It said 8 weeks. I pointed that out and everyone started panicking. They *really* were expecting to have it done by a certain date, with no relation to the date the work started.

    @moo:

    I only heard of this issue when I bumped into you in Agni a few hours back. Sorry I can’t see you atm. Have you explained to the manufacturer of the importance of the video card and seen if they could work out a compromise on the RMA (like a loaner card delivered just in time to shorten the wait period?)

    @taterunino:

    It wasn’t doable in that single day right? and throwing more manpower and more dollars at it wouldn’t have improved matters, right? xD Some days, I do wonder how these “set up to fail before even starting” projects get off the ground. seriously.

    Heh, Moo, is that you? This is Neil RRR. Or, it was once.

    Anyway, I had problems that sound kinda similar to that once, and the solution to the problem was.. Allison took my machine apart and sprayed the crap out of most of it with one of those compressed air things. It worked pretty good for a while after that. Still not perfect, but it’d prolly get you through your project or whatever.. plus compressed air costs $6 or so lol.

    I just signed up to this thing and started a blog, how weird to find yours above mine off the secondlife tag link :)

    Neil.
